Brûlée's surgery was completed successfully! She has been discharged from the hospital and is resting comfortably in a medical foster home.
During surgery, they performed a colopexy, a procedure designed to help prevent future prolapses by securing the colon in place. They also conducted an exploratory examination and the good news is that no tumor was found.
The veterinary team collected multiple biopsies and cultures that have been sent to the laboratory to determine whether an underlying disease is causing Brûlée's recurring prolapses. The doctors are looking for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), lymphangiectasia, or other intestinal disorders that may require additional treatment.
This situation is highly unusual. In young puppies, recurrent prolapses are most often caused by parasites. However, Brûlée has been tested multiple times, treated proactively, and parasites have been ruled out. Now, we wait for the biopsy and culture results to hopefully provide the answers we've been searching for.
Our greatest hope is that nothing significant is found. If the biopsies come back normal, the doctors believe this may simply be a hereditary or genetic issue, and the surgery alone could be the solution Brûlée needs to live a long, healthy life.
For now, Brûlée's job is simple: rest, heal, and be a puppy again.
